Hilo, Hawaiʻi: Navigating Our Institutions' Future

A collaboration between Hawaiʻi Museums Association and East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center

Location: East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center (EHCC), Hilo, HI

Address: 141 Kalakaua St., Hilo, HI 96720

Full program: 9:30 am - 3:45 pm

The Conference

Our Hawaiʻi cultural institutions have long been islands upon islands; each one, a separate, isolated representation of the personalities and perspectives which initiated that venture. At our conference, Navigating Our Institutions' Future, we hope to a) identify the distinct ways each of our institutions is unique, b) share our plans and aspirations for the near and long term, and c) consider ways in which we can cooperate to synergistically improve outcomes. Each panelist represents one of the many unique cultural institutions located on the Big Island.

Joining us in this discussion will be:

Stephen Freedman, Chair, East Hawaii Cultural Center

Michael A. Nelson, Chief Executive Officer, Volcano Arts Center

Emily Leucht, Director, Wailoa Center

Christian Wong, Executive Director, Hawaiʻi Science & Technology Museum

Moderator:

Carol Walker, Executive Director, East Hawaiʻi Cultural Center and Director, Hawaiʻi Museums Association

We will also be sharing pre-recorded messages from:

Sara Nealy, Executive Director, Kahilu Theatre

Mina Elison, Communications Director and Curator, Donkey Mill Art Center

Lunch and Tour at Sculpture Garden

In the afternoon, participants have the opportunity to enjoy catered lunch* at a very special private location in Pepeʻekeo (ca. 10 miles from Hilo). Michael Shewmaker, a longtime patron of EHCC, private collector, and artist, is opening up his beautiful sculpture garden to all, for continued conversation over a meal at his unique home.

*Lunch will be catered by Sweet Cane Cafe, a local farm-to-table eatery in the heart of Hilo.

Back at the gallery, we will walk through the current exhibition, Terra Forme, with Andrzej Kramarz, Gallery Director and Curator.
